Clothed By Christ
All authority in heaven and on earth resides in the nail-scarred hands of Jesus, who came to give you eternal life and teach you what it means to be born again. For God so loved the world that He sent His Son to save.
“Hoshea…became king of Israel in Samaria…He did evil in the eyes of the Lord…the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea was a traitor. …The king of Assyria invaded the entire land…and deported the Israelites to Assyria…All this took place because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods and followed the practices of the nations…They worshiped idols…they would not listen…So the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence…To this day they persist in their former practices. They neither worship the Lord nor adhere to the…commands that the Lord gave…Do not forget the covenant I have made with you, and do not worship other gods. Rather, worship the Lord your God; it is he who will deliver you…they would not listen, however, but persisted in their former practices.“ 2 Kings 17:1-41
Do you ever read a Bible story like this and think, What were they thinking? Why would they not just have followed God and done what was right? Why would they participate in the practices of the very nations that had enslaved them and worship idols? How could they not see that it is God alone who delivered them and daily provides for their needs? Why would they be unfaithful?
The short answer is that they preferred darkness to the light. The people liked the sensual nature of those who worshiped Baal. They liked the pleasures of the parties people threw to worship false idols. The food was good. The times were fun. Sound familiar? This is not just an ancient phenomenon; this is our present-day reality.
Sinning can be fun. It seems great to satisfy your flesh in the moment, but truth tells us that God sees. He says we are all accountable for our choices, and He knows our hearts. You cannot hide your sin from God or the things your heart worships more than Him. Where have you been like the Israelites and allowed your flesh to decide what you will do rather than following the Spirit?
The text says God was angry. Do you understand that God cares? When you pursue pleasure, it causes God pain because He sees you as His bride. He has emotion. He is not a distant judge, but a present Father. He is righteously jealous, loves faithfully, and expects faithful love to be returned. How would it change how you lived if all your choices were filtered by whether they were faithful and pleasing to God?
“Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit. Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name. For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever.” Psalms 30:2-12
David looked at everything through the lens of dichotomy. Things were either God’s way or not. He sang of life or death, light or darkness, spirit or flesh, faithful or unfaithful, weeping or rejoicing, wailing or dancing, praise or silence. We live in a world that loves to blur the lines, live in the gray, and twist truth. David wanted none of that type of living or loving because that mindset is not what pleases the Maker.
David was aware he angered God, but he discovered that God does not want to stay angry. His anger is meant to draw us closer so that we might find the favor He wants us to have. David knew his sin deserved death, but instead of punishment he was met with mercy. He was given new life by God. So have you.
God’s mercy made a difference in how he lived. His redemption led him to a place of rejoicing. He traded the sackcloth he had earned for the wedding garments of praise. God’s saving grace could be seen on him because he was clothed in joy. What do people see in you and on you? Is the joy of your salvation evident? It should be.
“Do not envy the wicked, do not desire their company…If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength! Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?…wisdom is like honey for you: If you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice…Do not fret because of evildoers or be envious of the wicked, Fear the Lord…An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips. Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house. I went past the field of a sluggard, past the vineyard of someone who has no sense; thorns had come up everywhere, the ground was covered with weeds, and the stone wall was in ruins.” Proverbs 24:1-31
Wisdom tells us that there is work to do. Those who revere the Lord steer clear of people who practice sin. Just like the Israelites, we will be influenced by those around us. People have said, “Show me your five closest friends, and I will show you your future.” Wisdom tells us the same thing in this passage. Those who pursue God and allow the Spirit to clear the weeds from their fields will have space to make Jesus the foundation for their lives. What work do you need to do to make room for the King to reign in your life?
Wisdom tells us that not everyone will find freedom. Those who allow their hearts to envy others, lust after the things of the world, and those who are lazy will live in darkness. Following Jesus is not a passive pursuit. There is work to be done and an expectation that we will listen and obey. If you haphazardly attend church and bypass the spiritual practices that produce righteous fruit like prayer and fellowship, you are likely the sluggards described in this story and need to change. This is not works-based theology; this is simple awareness of how weeds ruin a garden.
Solomon reminded us in this passage that God sees everything. He sets a higher standard for kingdom living. He said to save others because life is not just about you. He said if you act like you do not see those in need, then apathy is your weed, and you will be uprooted. Wisdom tells us not to gloat when our enemies fall because God wants us to develop a heart of compassion where our anger or offense does not rule us. Anger is an emotion we will have, but as Paul says, we are meant to take every thought captive to Christ. Where have you allowed your heart to be apathetic toward others and not shared the good news of the joy of your salvation?
“Go and buy a linen belt and put it around your waist…Take the belt you bought and are wearing around your waist, and go now to Perath and hide it there in a crevice in the rocks…get the belt I told you to hide there.” So I went to Perath and dug up the belt…but now it was ruined and completely useless. “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will ruin the pride…These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt—completely useless!…I bound all the people…to be my people for my renown and praise and honor. But they have not listened.’ Hear and pay attention, do not be arrogant…Give glory to the Lord your God before he brings the darkness…You hope for light, but he will turn it to utter darkness…If you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly, overflowing with tears, because the Lord’s flock will be taken captive. And if you ask yourself, “Why has this happened to me?”—it is because of your many sins…because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.” Jeremiah 13:1-25
You were made for a purpose and to praise the name of the Lord. God uses the image of a linen belt that gets stuffed in a crevice to illustrate what it is like when people do not live for God. A life lived for the flesh is worthless. There is nothing lasting about temporary pleasures or sinful ways, so why do people choose to live for the flesh over the Spirit? We are meant to lives of substance and meaning. A worthy lives ends in hearing the words well done good and faithful servant.
The connections in these passages today run deep. We see the opposite of mourning turning to joy, like David sang, as God warns about joy turning to mourning. God said you will see darkness instead of light because you prefer darkness. He said stubbornness and pride will keep you from hearing the voice that can bring healing and hope to you. God knows how sin can easily entangle and strangle your faith. Sin is a slippery slope, often starting with allowing something small to seduce you into believing the lie that it is okay to permit the flesh to be gratified.
The enemy of your life is incredible at enticing us to sin and see God in a false light. God is our Father, and He is faithful. The enemy wants you to see Him as Judge and jury. Where have you hardened your heart? Where have you listened to the lies of the enemy or allowed fear to impact your faith? Do you know that God wants to guide you to a place of freedom and faithfulness? This can never be done in your own strength but is always possible through the power of the Holy Spirit.
“Nicodemus…came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit…so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. The bride belongs to the bridegroom. He must become greater; I must become less…for God gives the Spirit without limit. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them.” John 3:1-36
For God so loved the world that He sent His Son. If you get nothing out of today other than the simple truth that you are loved by God so much that He died for you, that is enough. It is the love of God that transforms hearts and transforms lives. It is His mercy that makes the difference and leads us from mourning to rejoicing. When we can see the heart of the Father and the hands of the Son, we can sing the song of the redeemed and learn to walk in the light. Praise God for the truth of John 3:16.
Jesus is the Deliverer who was promised and is the way to peace with God. David could not save himself from sin. Wisdom exposed the weeds in our fields but could not remove them. Jeremiah warned about the darkness but was helpless to fix hard hearts. Then Jesus came. He stepped into our sinful world and meets us where we are. He entered our darkness, took our judgment upon Himself, and made a way for us to be born again by the Spirit.
John 3 is not simply words on a page; it is God’s answer to sin. Jesus changes how we see every battle we face. We walk in victory. Sin still entices us but no longer has the power to separate those who are in Christ. We are His, and He is ours. Every day we face the choice of whether we will step back into the shadows or walk in the light. Every day we choose whether we will follow the flesh or let the Spirit lead.
The world desperately needs the good news of Jesus. Our neighbors, coworkers, friends, and even our enemies need grace and truth. Let the joy of your salvation, found in Jesus Christ, move you to serve, sacrifice, share, forgive, and love like He does.
Lift up Jesus today. Raise a hallelujah to the One who has all authority in heaven and on earth. Share your story. Worship the One who turned your mourning into dancing, your guilt into forgiveness, your darkness into light, and your death into life. The Father did not send His Son to condemn but to save, and He has given His Spirit without limit to all who believe.
Walk in that freedom. Live in that hope. Let Christ become greater in every part of your life until the joy of your salvation is so evident that others cannot help but see the goodness of the God who so loved the world that He sent His only Son so that you would find eternal life.
